How should I dress for the Opera?

I'm bringing my mom to the Metropolitan Opera for her birthday, and I want to make sure I'm appropriately dressed. The show is at 8pm.

Very dressy. You can wear ankle length, but can also go "tea" length, or to the knees. No minis. Very nice slacks suit okay. Can wear diamonds, better jewelry.

No jeans, chinos, casual pants, sundress, flip flops.

an evening dress is appropriate, accompanied by some tasteful jewelry. happy birthday to your mom and enjoy the opera. if you are a male, a blue or black tux can be worn.
Formal Attire is usually the standard for the Opera!
Pretty formally. A nice dress or shirt and suit trousers.
Black tie formal. One of the places you do not want to under-dress for is opera at the Met. It's sort of a high-society thing,, take it from someone who's been there, some of the clothes they wear are outrageous.

Anyway, it's a brilliant gift and I hope you have a good time. You may want to take opera glasses, depending on where you're sitting, though there's no bad seats at the opera house.

Also, keep in mind is considered not proper to yell requests for songs, but if you mention your mother's birthday, you are allowed to ask the diva to sing Happy Birthday to your mom during the second act (not the first!)
Wear your best suit. I'd say rent a tux but you are short on time. Just try to look like Ron Burgundy basically.

Oh I forgot - the dress code is of course not the same being considered where your seat is.
Wear a dress, simple in style and color. Look as elegant as you can, not loud. No patterns or tons of jewelry.
