Because the original sponsors were soap and detergent makers.

Lux, Ivory Snow, Oxydol to name a few.

The shows follow the same type format as an opera... heroes and villains alike.

Because they used to be sponsored primarily by detergent companies during the 1950's. hence the phrase soap opera.
well opera come from "telling a story" like and opera

but the soap come from way back when TV was new and commercials were even newer so when the women turned on to see the stories the commercial came with it cuz they new that the women were watching these store and now they could sell there soap
JD is correct. The term goes back to the time when such shows were on the radio, before TV, and the sponsors were primarily manufacturers of household cleaners due the predominant housewife audience.
They were designed as an advertising vehicle for soap products, in the days when moms and wives stayed home. I'm unsure about the "opera" reference - maybe because, like an opera, soaps tell a compelling story with tragedy and comedy, with complex characters.
You can't be that dense?

What do you think the biggest sponser of Daytime tv, (Procter %26amp; Gamble) makes?
