Is $50 dollars to much for opera lessons?

I contact a lady that would help me take opera lessons. But she charges $50 for one hour of lessons. Can any one that has had lessons before tell me if this is too much or just right?

Well...it depends. How much experience does the teacher have? If she's been around the block a few times, it'll be worth it. I have seen people who should be plumbers instead of singers charge top dollar too.....just because they can say OP-ER-AH.....and make it sound good....if you know what I mean. Just because it's opera doesn't mean they can charge you through the roof....unless they are incredible to begin with.

Best thing I can tell you, ask former or present students what she's like. Even if she's a good singer, that doesn't mean she'll be a good teacher. Even if the students rave about her.....take a couple of lessons to start. Maybe her teaching style doesn't jive with you.

Is she the only teacher you've called? Shop around a bit. Call music stores...if they don't have vocal teachers( and I find that hard to believe that they WOULDN'T) ask them to recommend someone. There are teachers that teach pop and jazz along with opera styles.

Remember, you're investing YOUR time and YOUR money...and you don't want to waste either.

If you're not willing to pay it, then it's too much. Voice lessons are not cheap, but shop around. You might try a community college.

It depends on how well trained your instructor is and where you live. I charge $25 for 45 minutes, but live in a relatively rural area. If you are near a big city it's probably very reasonable for someone who in knowledgeable. Good Luck!
If she is a professional singer, that's about right. If she's just some lady who fancies herself a singer that's pretty steep. Most (or at least a lot of) professional musicians supplement their income by teaching lessons. Lessons from a professional who has a regular gig in a professional group range from $50 to $120 an hour.
it depends on the teacher's credentials, the area you live in, and what you expect to get from the lessons. If the person has very good performing/teaching experiences and good references, (this person should have at least a master's degree in vocal performance from one of the better music schools in the nation ,sung in some operas and concerts and a good teaching reputation) then $50/hour is not that outrageous. the bottom line is that the teacher has to deliver what you are looking for.
I pay $40 an hour for voice lessons. My teacher has her doctorate.
