We're going to see an opera at the SF Opera, and I know that usually people have formal attire on for evening performances. Since this performance is at 2PM, would there be a difference in attire? If so, what?

yes a different attire is called for. you should wear a pair of causual kaki pants with an ordinary church church shirt tucked in. she should wear something that she would normally wear on a first date to nice restaraunt. nothing to jazzy like jewelry or pinned up hair. dress as if your trying to impress one another on a first date, this is day time formal!
Dress nicely, but formal attire is not required. A nice, dressy pantsuit or semi-formal dress would be appropriate (go for longer lengths, not a cocktail dress, though), as would a suit and tie, although full tux would not be necessary. Hope you have a wonderful time at the opera!

just don`t 0ver dress it will make you look like its your first opera. Ill give you some don`t since everyone else is giving you the do`s. don`t wear jeans, shorts, tennis shoes, flip flops, hiking attire, slutty looking stuff, lots of make up, just remember the people came to hear and see the opera not you. blend in and enjoy this very special afternoon. wear some thing comfortable.
