Does anyone else find camera work on opera's on TV or DVD recorded versions irritating?

Opera is an art form that is really meant to be watched at a distance. Firstly because the stage settings are an important integral part of the performance that needs to be in view all the time in order that one can see what other members of the cast are doing as well as the artist singing at any particular given time. Secondly, because frankly, many of the singers (who may well have excellent voices), do not unfortunately have looks to match the nature of the character they are playing, and are therefore better seen at a distance so that one's imagination can have some input as well.

Although it is of course the quality of the voice that is of most importance, I do find it very irritating when the cameras are taken in on close up of the singers head or face which simply shows how hard they are working at producing the sound and does nothing to enhance the level of enjoyment from watching the performance. It must be quite difficult for the singers to act as well without this.

You have really answered your own question.

Opera, and any stage work, is meant to be viewed live, not on the TV. The angles are all wrong, and the effect is claustrophobic.

As I can't afford to go to the opera, I prefer to listen to recordings and use my imagination!
